Youth Arts Takeover: Clocktower Edition

A free youth arts day created by and for young people.

The Croydon Youth Arts Collective (CYAC) has set out an ambitious plan to get more young people in Croydon engaging in arts and culture. CYAC has been developed by young creatives who are passionate about making a difference in their local area.

This event encompassed a mass Takeover of Croydon’s iconic Clocktower complex on 29 October 2016. Creative activity spilled out across eleven spaces, including the Library and Museum, the David Lean Cinema and the Town Hall, all inviting young people to engage with different art forms.

From face painting in the Atrium, to theatre and dance workshops in the Town Hall; from live music in the Braithwaite Hall to 3D printing and virtual reality workshops in the Library, there was something for everyone. Highlights included a panel discussion with industry professionals and key cultural decision-makers about the ‘Future of the Arts’ in Croydon in the Council Chamber.

Over 1,000 children families and young people attended the event. A huge range of partner organisations were involved which allowed for a wonderfully diverse audience to fill the spaces throughout the day. RefugeeYouth and Croydon Youth Council showed films in the David Lean Cinema; South London Inclusive Dance Experience and carnival band Kinetika Bloco Croydon offered pop-up performances in the Atrium; rappers and vocalists from Syrus Consultancy and Croydon Youth Theatre Organisation roused the Braithwaite Hall with live performance, where there were also beautiful displays of fashion pieces from Coulsdon Sixth Form College. The Deputy Mayor of Croydon stated: “I believe it to be the best “youth event” in Croydon for many years, it was just electrifying!”

CYAC are encouraging more young people to join them. They are already beginning to plan next year’s Takeover event, taking place in October 2017. If you're a young creative aged 14-19 and you're interested in taking part in CYAC, get in touch!
