Senior Bands & Orchestras

Friday Evenings

This centre is for some of our most advanced players. The first half of the evening consists of Croydon Youth Winds and two string orchestras though the strings may sometimes come together as Croydon Youth Strings.  For the second half of the evening the same players divide into a Youth Orchestra, for the most advanced players, and a Concert Orchestra.

The centre is for young string players from around Grade 4 and wind and percussion players from around Grade 5.  Please note that these standards are guidelines, and that other factors such as the length of time that the student has been learning may be taken into consideration. Players may be invited to audition to become members, especially for the Youth Orchestra.

Croydon Youth Winds

CYW is for players of Wind, Brass and Percussion instruments of Grade 5 and above. It aims to develop the students' ensemble skills and expand their musical knowledge through rehearsal and performance. The band performs at the end of term concerts each term and in other prestigious venues. It performs music from core wind band repertoire as well as arrangements of film music and music from musicals. Players have the opportunity to explore more exotic instruments within their instrument family, such as the marimba and other tuned percussion, Eb, alto and bass clarinet and full range of saxophones. More advanced players can perform solos with the band.

Croydon Youth Strings

Croydon Youth Strings provides the opportunity for string players in Concert and/or Youth Orchestra to develop their ensemble skills and expand their musical knowledge. Students learn about independent part playing skills and are encouraged to develop the vibrant colours and sounds which characterise good orchestral playing.

Croydon Youth Concert Orchestra

The Croydon Youth Concert Orchestra welcomes students who have progressed from Concert Band or String Orchestra, or new members of a suitable level (approximately Grade 5 - 7 for Wind/Brass and 4 - 6 for Strings). Members also play in Croydon Youth Strings and Croydon Youth Winds that run at our Friday centre. CYCO repertoire is often selected from film and show music, with recent pieces including the ‘Star Wars’ Main Theme and ‘Minnie The Moocher’ from ‘The Blues Brothers’. They sometimes collaborate with other ensembles and in previous years have performed some Queen and Jimi Hendrix pieces with a guest electric guitarist. There is a fun and sociable atmosphere amongst the members but with a serious focus on orchestral training. Most members progress to the Youth Orchestra after a couple of years in this group.

Croydon Youth Orchestra

Croydon Youth Orchestra is a versatile full-size Symphony Orchestra. It performs  symphonies to  chamber music. The highlight of our year is when Peter Stark, conducting professor at the Royal College of music, visits for a weekend course and concert. Members of the orchestra are encouraged to perform concertos, many of whom go on to study music at university and Conservatoires. As well as performing every term there is an annual tour abroad. Recent tours have included Portugal, Germany and Belgium.
