Saturday Mornings

This centre caters for our beginner players and offers a range of groups to join to suit the majority of young instrumentalists and singers. It is often involved in project-based work, where guest artists are invited to collaborate with our Saturday groups. In the past, this has included sessions with the Grand Union Orchestra, Kinetika Bloco and Stomp. More information about each group can be found below.

Star Workshop - Wind & Percussion

 

What is it?

Being a member of our Star Workshop involves two hours of music workshops that take place at our Croydon Young Musicians centre. The first hour is instrumental workshops for wind, brass and percussion players who are in year 3 and above and are in the early stages of learning. The second hour is VoiceWorks, a choir for all children involved in workshops where there is opportunity to learn new singing techniques and a fun range of pieces as well as meet musicians from other workshop groups.

 

The Workshops are designed to complement the music-making opportunities young instrumentalists and singers have in schools and help them to develop the skills which are essential for making further progress in music and for joining more advanced groups.

 

Young musicians study and perform an exciting mixture of music including classical and popular styles and folk music from around the world. They are also offered exciting performance opportunities, such as playing in large-scale concert halls. Performances take place throughout the year.

 

When is it?

Saturdays, 9.00 – 11.00am

 

How much is it?

£32.00 per term

£12.80 per term for students who receive Free School Meals

This fee includes an average of 10 sessions per term. There is no extra charge for belonging to more than one group or centre.

 

Progression routes

When students' abilities have progressed beyond those catered for in the Star Workshops they are promoted to Concert Band. Workshop Leaders will advise on when this progression should take place.

GuitarWorks

Being a member of GuitarWorks involves two hours of music workshops that take place at our Croydon Young Musicians centre. The first hour is instrumental workshops for guitar players who are in year 3 and above and are in the early stages of learning.

 

The Workshops are designed to complement the music-making opportunities young instrumentalists and singers have in schools and help them to develop the skills which are essential for making further progress in music and for joining more advanced groups.

When students' abilities have progressed beyond those catered for GuitarWorks they are promoted to Guitar Ensemble. Workshop Leaders will advise on when this progression should take place.

Concert Band

 

What is it?

This group is for members who have progressed from BandWorks and forms the second stage at our Croydon Young Musicians centre.

 

The sessions begin with students choosing one of two options for the first hour:

• VoiceWorks Choir – for those who wish to develop their singing alongside their instrumental playing;

• Separate instrumental sessions for clarinet/saxophone, flute, brass and percussion.

 

At 11.00am they come together for the Concert Band, an ensemble that learns a fun range of pieces and has many exciting performance opportunities throughout the year, including large-scale concert halls and more intimate venues.

 

Concert Band is designed for young instrumentalists who play woodwind, brass, or percussion from around Grade 2 to Grade 5 standard.

 

When is it?

Saturdays, 10.00am – 12.15pm

 

How much is it?

£51.00 per term

£20.40 per term for students who receive Free School Meals

 

This fee includes an average of 10 sessions per term. There is no extra charge for belonging to more than one group or centre.

 

Progression routes

As their playing develops, students may be invited by teachers to join one of the ensembles at our Tuesday centre while still attending Croydon Young Musicians.  When students have progressed beyond the Concert Band they join the senior band and orchestra at our Friday centre.

String Orchestra

 

What is it?

This group is for members who have progressed from StringWorks and forms the second stage at our Croydon Young Musicians centre.

 

The sessions begin with students choosing one of two options for the first hour:

• VoiceWorks Choir – for those who wish to develop their singing alongside their instrumental playing;

• Separate instrumental sessions for violin, viola, cello and double bass.

 

At 11.00am they come together for the String Orchestra, that learns a fun range of pieces and has many exciting performance opportunities throughout the year, including large-scale concert halls and more intimate venues.

 

String Orchestra is designed for young instrumentalists who violin, viola, cello and double bass from around Grade 2 to Grade 5 standard.

 

When is it?

Saturdays, 10.00am – 12.15pm

 

How much is it?

£51.00 per term

As their playing develops, students may be invited by teachers to join our senior orchestra at our Friday centre.

RockWorks

 

What are they?

RockWorks is for electric and bass guitarists, drummers, keyboard players and singers who wish to play in a band. Members are shown how to set up and get the best out of their equipment as well as learning to perform rock and pop music. Students are also given the opportunity to perform in shows throughout the year that in the past have included summer festivals and large-scale venues in Croydon. RockWorks is designed for beginner musicians who progress up to RockShop once they have reached grade 3 standard.

Saturdays, 11.00am - 12.15pm

 

How much is it?
